Counsellor Candidate
City of Richmond

Michael Lok is a proven community leader, business advocate, and internationally recognized martial arts master who has spent over 30 years serving the people of Richmond. His life’s work reflects a deep commitment to building stronger communities, supporting local businesses, and empowering future generations.

After immigrating to Canada, Michael built his life on the values taught by his father, a Korean martial arts master—discipline, respect, resilience, and service. These principles have guided him not only in martial arts, but in his leadership across Richmond’s business and community sectors.

In 1996, Michael founded Lok’s Hapkido School in Richmond. What began as a small startup became one of Canada’s largest martial arts schools, serving over 5,000 students. Beyond physical training, his school has become a hub for youth development, mentorship, and community engagement—helping young people build confidence, respect, and leadership skills.

Michael’s contributions to Richmond extend far beyond his school. He has consistently stepped into leadership roles that directly impact the city’s growth and well-being:

* Director, Richmond Asia Pacific Business Assoc. (1999) – supporting local businesses and economic development

* Director, Richmond Chamber of Commerce (2005) – supporting local businesses and economic development

* Richmond Chamber of Commerce: Canada Asia Network Committee CNAC(2007-Present) founding member - Extending networking /business development of RCC members

* Canada Asia Network Committee (since 2009) – strengthening international trade and cultural connections

* President 2010 Richmond Cathay Lions Club (2008)– leading charitable initiatives and community service programs

* President 2015 - Canadian Chinese Business Development Association (2011-Present) – advocating for entrepreneurship and cross-cultural business growth

Through these roles, Michael has worked closely with business leaders, families, and community organizations—bridging cultures and creating opportunities that benefit Richmond’s diverse population.

On the global stage, Michael has demonstrated strong leadership and vision. As a 9th Dan Black Belt (Korea, 2019) and International Hapkido President (appointed 2022), he has led international expansion across Asia and Canada, building networks, managing organizations, and developing future leaders. His ability to lead across cultures and systems reflects the same skills needed in public office.

At the core of Michael’s philosophy is the Hapkido principle of “Sun” (善)—meaning goodness, service, and responsibility to others. He believes leadership is not about authority, but about contribution—serving the community with integrity, compassion, and action.

Now, Michael Lok is stepping forward to serve at the next level.

As a candidate for Richmond City Council on October 17, 2026, he brings:

  • Over 30 years of real community involvement

  • Proven leadership in business and non-profit organizations

  • A track record of building programs that impact thousands of residents

  • A clear understanding of Richmond’s diverse cultural and economic landscape

Michael’s vision is practical and people-focused:

to support local businesses, strengthen public safety, create more opportunities for youth, and build a more connected and inclusive Richmond. He is not just talking about change—he has been delivering it for decades.
